Most tractor buyers consider the following specifications when selecting a tractor:
Tractor horsepower: The power the engine transfers to the tractor to operate itself and from there, any implements or accessories. A large row crop farmer will likely require a 300-500+ horsepower tractor to manage his or her operation, while a large property owner may only need a 25-32 horsepower compact tractor to maintain his yard.
Tractor hours: The number of hours the tractor has been in operation. Typically, tractors with lower hours will be more expensive than those with more hours, however, that isn’t the only indication of the tractor's condition and useability.
Tractor PTO: The tractor PTO, or Power Take Off, transfers energy via a spinning shaft to an implement behind the tractor. Depending on the different type of implements you’ll be powering (see below), a tractor with a PTO may likely be required.
Tractor implements: The additional tools that can be attached to or pulled behind the tractor to help you complete the job at hand. Some popular compact and utility tractor implements include, but are not limited to, a box blade, front end loader, rotary tiller, rear blade, post hole digger, mower/cutter, and snow blower.
