What would eventually be known as Freightliner Trucks started out as an idea. Leland James wanted to build trucks and their components with lightweight aluminum versus the existing steel components and while that idea was initially laughed at, Freightliner Trucks was born from it. 

In the last 80 years, Freightliner has proven its commitment to its business owner, fleet manager, and professional driver customers by continually bringing innovation to the market. Some of its most notable product milestones include introducing the first overhead sleeper model (WF64) in 1953, the launch of the Turboliner in 1965, which weighed 2,400 pounds less than similar trucks, and the introduction of the first aerodynamic conventional tractor model, the FLD, in 1987. The company continues to innovate and look for ways to increase freight hauling abilities, while also optimizing fuel efficiency and driver comfort.
