This What’s It Worth? analysis is requested by Tory M., a row crop farmer from Illinois.
Tory is considering selling or trading in his 2021 John Deere S780 that has about 705 engine hours and 490 separator hours.
Before he makes a decision, he wants to know what it’s worth to see what he might expect to receive if he sells at an upcoming auction or as a trade-in at his local dealership.
An analysis of the Tractor Zoom Pro database reports an average auction sale price of $343,018 based on 14 sale results for John Deere S780 combines going back to July 2020.
From an analysis of combine auction values in the Tractor Zoom Pro database, we find the average price of S780s sold in the past six months and filtered by hour range between 1-500 hours is $389,127, based on 41 auction results.
One of the most recent sales of John Deere S780 is a 2021 with 495 sep. hours and 718 engine hours that sold for $315,800 on November 8, 2023, at auction in Illinois not far from Tory.

In a Q3 farm equipment market trends webinar hosted by Tractor Zoom Director of Insights Andy Campbell, we looked into the data for supply and value of Class 8 combines and how both have changed in the past year.
Between November 2022 through mid-summer 2023, we saw a 70% increase in Class 8 combine supply, which prompted dealers to move machines. According to Tractor Zoom Pro data, there were 4X as many combines with less than 1,000 separator hours sold in August 2023 as the same month in 2022. Overall, large combine auction values are down about 5-10% year over year.
Understanding the market trends and values, especially in the historically active end-of-year buying season, will ultimately help Tory decide the best path to sell his S780 to receive top-dollar.
It’s important to note that the above is not a complete evaluation or valid estimate of Tory’s combine. Additional information such as condition, total hours, tires or tracks, drive, or other features will affect the estimated value.
